How To Get A Golf Scholarship

Golf is getting more and more popular thanks to Tiger Woods. As its popularity increases, there are more and more student-athletes that are getting involved with Junior golf programs. With this increase in popularity, comes an increase in competition for college golf scholarships. Due to this increase in scholarship competition, I want to share with you some basic guidelines that will help you get a college golf scholarship.

Keep in mind that these are just parameters. If a college coach sees something about your game that he/she really likes, the coach may still offer you a scholarship…even if you do not meet these guidelines.

Do not let these parameters deter you from shooting for the stars in your college golf goals. I am only 6′, and I played quarterback in the Pac-10…most Pac-10 quarterbacks are at least 6′2″.

I think it is important to know what college coaches are looking for because it gives you something to shoot for…a goal to strive for as you practice and prepare.

Also, please remember the FUNDAMENTALS of college recruiting still apply…it is critical that you do well in the classroom, and you do whatever it takes to promote yourself to college coaches…and YES this does include video of your different club swings and putting.

Preferred academic standards are 3.0+ GPA and a 24+ACT/1000+SAT

The single, most common question I get from parents is, “What does my student-athlete have to shoot to get a college golf scholarship?”

RECRUITING GUIDELINES

A Division 1 coach is looking for MALE golfers to have a SCRATCH handicap, and FEMALE golfers to have a handicap from 0-5.

Division 2 coaches are typically looking for male golfers to have a 0-4 handicap, and their female golfers to have a 0-10 handicap.

A D3 coach is looking to recruit male golfers with an 8-13 handicap and female golfers with a 10-20 handicap.

ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The Psychology Of The Parents Of Balloon Boy

This past week we saw the news media captivated by the idea that a 6-year-old boy, Falcon Heene had been carried off by a weather balloon. That is until the boy was later found in his own garage attic and shortly thereafter it was revealed on a television news show that the entire incident was likely a hoax. In replying to a reporter’s question, the young Falcon turned to his dad on camera and said, “You guys said that, umm, we did this for the show.” Oops.

The parents – Richard Heene and Mayumi Heene – have all along claimed it was not a hoax or a publicity stunt. Now, according to The New York Times, the parents will voluntarily surrender to police as soon as charges are filed, which is expected to happen on Wednesday.

While the truth continues to unfold, the police in the investigation have concluded it was likely indeed a publicity stunt: “We have evidence to indicate it was a publicity stunt done with the hope of marketing themselves to a reality-television show sometime in the future,” said Larimer County sheriff Jim Alderden on Sunday afternoon at a news conference in Fort Collins, Colorado.

So that leaves us with the inevitable question – what could possibly psychologically motivate parents to use their child’s very life in order to further themselves?

We see clues to the answer in some other information that’s trickling out about the parents. ABC News noted that former business partner Barbara Slusser – who chased hurricanes and other storms with the Heenes – that they parted ways when Slusser felt that the Heenes often put their kids in harm’s way. Slusser told ABC News, “The last straw for us was when Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Ike were heading toward the Texas coastline and Heene wanted to go back there and take the kids.”

So we seem to have a set of parents who already don’t quite understand the idea of how to raise children in a safe, responsible and thoughtful manner, thinking nothing of storm-chasing hurricanes and tornadoes with their young children in tow. Storm-chasing, of course, can be a very dangerous and unpredictable endeavor. One of the reasons adults do it is for the thrill of the unpredictability of the storm – putting oneself in harm’s way to experience a ferocious component of nature. But your children? They aren’t old enough to make such decisions for themselves – they trust their parents’ good judgment and experience.

But an account on Gawker by someone who worked with Richard Heene sheds even more light on the Heenes’ motivation – money and additional fame. This was a family that had been on the television program, Wife Swap, and they had already tasted celebrity. They wanted more of it.

Learning Management Systems: Making Training More Productive?

People in charge of organizing and planning the training methods for a business are often choosing many forms of Learning Management Systems. Learning online is a large part of any of these systems that utilize both computers and the internet. People have been choosing Learning Management Systems because they have been proven effective for many of the following reasons.

Increase Efficiency of the Training Process

Gathering people together is not necessary with most Learning Management Systems. The applications used in the system bring people together by providing communication tools and online activities that parallel a traditional lecture or discussion group. Trainees are often given remote video instruction. Trainers can go through material quickly since most course material is available online in some form for reference at any time. Trainees can therefore learn at anytime from anywhere with an internet connection.

Tests can be written using Learning Management Systems either at scheduled times, or at the trainee’s leisure. Many of them are graded automatically so trainers can spend less time marking and more time assessing student progress. This provides the same amount of training with far less work by instructor. This can leave more time for the trainers to provide students with individual help and guidance.

Teach Anytime and Anyplace

Imagine recording an entire program of training with each session available at any time to trainees. Imagine being able to pause, rewind, and fast-forward any session along with notes available before each session.. Think about a forum where students can network and post questions to be answered by trainees and trainers.

This allows the organizers of training events to have sessions available to anyone using the Learning Management System before they even start the program. It would allow students to discuss the next session before beginning and any time after finishing. All of this could be available without ever setting foot inside a hall or lecture room.

Browsing the internet for “Learning Management Systems” will bring up quite a few companies selling many different system options. The intricate applications involved in these systems give the ultimate flexibility to trainees with access to computers. They have been found to provide successful training and are becoming commonly used.

Whales Mating Rituals And What Happens

While some whales have no particular time of the year for mating rituals, other whales mating rituals do include a mating season.

The whales mating rituals are a competition between male whales, known as bulls, during the mating season which is challenging. Ultimately the female makes the decision on which bull she mates with. Her decision is important because health and strength determines that of her calf. Whales only mate once every two years.

If it is a large species of whale, they often travel to the tropic to mate and give birth. The bulls travel in groups looking for the groups of female whales. When they find them, the bulls will sing and sometimes fight trying to attract a mate.

Using their vocal capabilities, males sing love songs in attempts to win over a female. While what we here my sound like clicks and squeaks, to the whales it is a song. Often rhyming, with verses and changing the songs to try to outperform one another. These songs can last for 10-20 minutes and are often repeated for hours. There are other tactics used to gain attention as well.

Some whales have tusks and will use them, in battle, to earn the females attention. These whales are known as Narwhal whales. They have tusk that protrudes from their top lip. Females and calves evacuate the surrounding area to avoid injury.

If the female approves of the males attempt, a dating period begins. During this time, the whales get to know one another. As part of the dating phase, whales will sing, swim in patterns, pose and touch each other. Once they become comfortable with each other, they mate, belly to belly.

After the mating ritual has ended, some whales leave and some stay. Those that leave return to the group of males they travel with. Those that stay protect the female and calf and form a family unit.

In his studies of whales one aspect that has always intrigued Jan van Nickerk is the whales mating rituals.

Training in Cisco CCNA Support Revealed

Should you be interested in training in Cisco, a CCNA is in all probability what you’ll need. The Cisco training is intended for individuals who wish to understand and work with routers. Routers are what connect networks of computers to other computer networks via dedicated lines or the internet.

As routers are connected to networks, find a course that features the basics on networks – perhaps Network+ and A+, and then do a CCNA course. It’s vital that you’ve got a basic grasp of networks prior to starting your Cisco training or the chances are you’ll fall behind. In the commercial environment, employers will be looking for networking skills in addition to the CCNA.

If you haven’t yet had any experience of routers, then studying up to CCNA is more than enough – at this stage avoid being tempted to do the CCNP. With a few years experience behind you, you can decide if it’s relevant for you to have this next level up.

Training support for students is an absolute must – look for a package that provides 24×7 direct access, as anything less will frustrate you and could hamper your progress.

Don’t buy training courses that only support trainees through a message system after 6-9pm in the evening and during weekends. Colleges will give you every excuse in the book why you don’t need this. The bottom line is – you need support when you need support – not when it’s convenient for them.

The best training colleges tend to use an online round-the-clock system involving many support centres across the globe. You will be provided with an interface which accesses the most appropriate office any time of the day or night: Support when it’s needed.

Don’t ever make the mistake of taking second best when it comes to your support. Most IT hopefuls who fall by the wayside, are in that situation because of support (or the lack of).

Make sure you don’t get caught-up, as a lot of students can, on the certification itself. Training for training’s sake is generally pointless; this is about gaining commercial employment. You need to remain focused on where you want to go.

Don’t be one of those unfortunate students who select a program which looks like it could be fun – and end up with a certification for a career they’ll never really get any satisfaction from.

It’s a good idea to understand what expectations industry may have of you. What precise exams they’ll want you to gain and how you’ll build your experience level. It’s definitely worth spending time thinking about how far you’d like to get as often it can control your selection of accreditations.

You’d also need help from a professional who understands the sector you’re hoping to qualify in, and who can give you ‘A typical day in the life of’ synopsis of the job being considered. This really is absolutely essential as you’ll need to know if you’re going down the right road.

Students who consider this area of study often have a very practical outlook on work, and won’t enjoy sitting at a desk in class, and endless reading of dry academic textbooks. If this is putting you off studying, try the newer style of interactive study, where learning is video-based.

Our ability to remember is increased when we use multiple senses – learning experts have been saying this for decades now.

Modern training can now be done at home via self-contained CD or DVD materials. Instructor-led tutorials will mean you’ll find things easier to remember via the expert demonstrations. Then you test your knowledge by using practice-lab’s.

You must ensure that you see courseware examples from the company you’re considering. Be sure that they contain full motion videos of instructors demonstrating the topic with lab’s to practice the skills in.

Some companies only have access to training that is purely available online; sometimes you can get away with this – but, imagine the problems if you lose your internet access or you get intermittent problems and speed issues. A safer solution is the provision of physical CD or DVD discs that removes the issue entirely.

Finding job security in the current climate is incredibly rare. Companies can remove us from the workplace at the drop of a hat – as long as it fits their needs.

We can however reveal security at the market sector level, by searching for high demand areas, tied with work-skill shortages.

Reviewing the computer industry, a key e-Skills study highlighted a twenty six percent shortfall of skilled workers. Or, to put it differently, this highlights that Great Britain is only able to source 3 trained people for every 4 jobs that are available today.

Well trained and commercially accredited new workers are consequently at a resounding premium, and it’s estimated to remain so for many years to come.

We can’t imagine if a better time or market circumstances is ever likely to exist for gaining qualification for this rapidly growing and developing sector.

10 Seo Questions

I wrote a comment yesterday in response to a couple of blog posts that attacked SEO and the SEO industry, attempting to illustrate to the author of the rants that search engine optimization brings a specialized skill set and a core group of knowledge that can help others, from small businesses with great ideas, to larger organizations that can benefit from an independent voice that has experience and knowledge about search engines.

Unfortunately, my comment went unpublished for whatever reason.

One of the underlying assertions of the post I responded to was that in the hands of a competent web developer, a site should rank well in search engines as long as the people behind the site created something great and beautiful, and told a couple of friends. Another of the underpinnings behind the rants against SEO was that search engine optimization wasn’t a legitimate form of marketing. A third postulated that SEOs were the force behind such things as the botnets, blog spam, and scraped and autogenerated content that appears on the Web.

With the exception of striving to build something great, I couldn’t disagree more strongly.

The practice of SEO isn’t web development, though it sometimes requires that development problems on a site be addressed. Successful search engine optimization starts with a number of questions, such as:

Who is your audience? Who are your competitors? What makes you stand out from your competitors?

Some other important steps can include learning about the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to a business, defining business goals, collaborating on defining metrics to measure success, and developing an SEO strategy to optimize a site for search engines and for visibility in other places on the Web.

The practice of SEO isn’t spamming the Web, with the creation and use of spyware, viruses, and scrapers that autogenerate web spam. Instead, it’s helping people make intelligent and creative decisions that help them reach an audience that is interested in what they have to offer.

In my response, I included 10 questions involving SEO and search engines which might be issues that search engine optimizers might come across, that I wouldn’t expect most developers to have spent much time thinking about. I’ve written about most of these here, and I thought it might be fun to share them.

1. What impacts might Microsoft’s VIPS, Yahoo’s Template Extraction, and Google’s Segmentation of Visual Gaps have upon a search engine’s weighing of links, document representation, shingles based duplicate content detection, and categorization of topics on a page, and how might a search engine determine which segment is the most important?

2. What steps should one take to try to get a site to rank well for a query in Google Maps, and how might something like location prominence and location sensitivity of that query term impact the range and rankings of sites that appear in a Google Maps listing?

3. What are some of the potential flaws that a search engineer might make when using a discounted cumulative gain approach to evaluating the relevancy of search results at different positions?

4. How might image size, image resolution, image contrast, inclusion of a face in an image, use of images across multiple pages of a site, internal links on a site to images, and external links on a site to images impact the possible rankings of images in search results?

5. What should be contained in a video XML sitemap to make it more likely that the videos included are crawled and indexed by Google?

6. How might Google customize search results for a searcher based upon language and country preferences and past browsing history, even when a searcher isn’t even logged into their Google account and seeing personalized results?

7. What types of user behavior data might the search engines be using to reorder search results besides simple clickthrough rates, and how might those kinds of signals be used in determining sitelinks or quicklinks that Google, Yahoo, and Bing may show in search results?

8. How might a search engine determine which kinds of results besides web pages to blend into search results, and how might that approach change when named entities are involved?

9. What kinds of ranking signals might make it more likely that a news source ranks well in Google’s news search, and why might the search engine choose one article over others when the stories are substantially similar?

10. How are search suggestions (query refinements) chosen by a search engine to include in search results, and why might a search engine show one type of search suggestion at the top of search results, and another type at the bottom of the results.
